![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The show's trailer offers a good glimpse at the kind of gritty, street-level action we can expect out of the reboot. Robert may not be a superhero, but the series has a vigilante edge to it that makes it feel right at home in the 21st century alongside the likes of The Punisher and John Wick. In fact, when you look at Washington's nearly 40-year career, the only sequel you'll see him in is 2018's The Equalizer 2.īased on the 1980s-era crime series of the same name starring Edward Woodward, The Equalizer movies utilize the same basic premise to follow Robert McCall (Washington), a man with a dangerous past who uses his skills to protect innocent people from those looking to cause them harm. Even when one of his most popular movies, Inside Man, received a sequel, he didn't appear in the follow-up (nor did anyone else from the original movie). His popularity is all the more impressive considering his tendency to stay away from big franchises. With Academy Award wins for his roles in Glory and Training Day, combined with standout performances in the likes of John Q., Inside Man, Fences, and so many other films, it's easy to see why the actor has remained so respected for decades. For now, The Equalizer 2021 stands on its own as a loose adaptation of the original '80s show, one that will allow CBS to comment on the Black Lives Matter movement along with other timely issues that will appeal to audiences.Denzel Washington is one of the most consistently bankable and popular stars in Hollywood. The producers for The Equalizer 2021 are reportedly open to a crossover with the movie series. It would certainly be fun for Washington to make a cameo on the CBS show and a narrative link could involve Queen Latifah landing a supporting role in The Equalizer 3, possibly as one of Bob's family members. The Equalizer 2021 may ultimately take a dark turn when exploring Robyn's backstory, but the overall violence won't match the movie series because of network restrictions. In contrast, Washington's Bob is a perfectionist who is triggered by the behavior of shameless baddies. Robyn wants to look after Big Apple natives who need help the most, all the while carrying on her normal life as a mother. In The Equalizer 2021, Robyn does indeed reference some troubling experiences from the past, but she doesn't seem too traumatized while protecting her daughter and Jewel Machado. Queen Latifah's characterization is much different than Washington's version of McCall in other ways. Both protagonists are charismatic, however, the movies frame the focal vigilante as a man who carries a heavy, heavy burden. Given that Queen Latifah is a Black woman, there's a slight thematic tweak that allows The Equalizer 2021 to provide timely societal commentaries from a different perspective. The movies starring Washington are indeed thrilling, but the 20 releases dates make them somewhat dated, at least in terms of what's happening right now in society during the era of COVID-19. The original 2014 movie focuses on a former Marine/DIA operative named Bob McCall who protects the citizens of Boston, whereas the new CBS show follows a former CIA operative named Robyn McCall who protects the citizens of New York City. The Equalizer 2021 is related to the Denzel Washington movies in spirit only. Eventually, she draws the attention of NYPD detective Marcus Dante (Tory Kittles). A former CIA director named William Bishop (Chris Noth) recruits Robyn for a private security job, but she prefers to battle crime on her own terms. When a young woman named Jewel Machado (Lorna Courtney) is framed for murder, Robyn chases after local baddies while teaming up with a former CIA sniper, Melody Chu (Liza Lapira), and a hacker who is legally dead (Adam Goldberg as Harry Keshegian). The new 2021 TV show follows Robyn McCall ( Queen Latifah), a former CIA operative who looks after her teenage daughter, Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes), in New York City. There are indeed similarities to The Equalizer movie, as both productions were inspired by the eponymous CBS series that aired from 1985 to 1989, however, the new network series has a standalone storyline that doesn't touch upon the films.
